Federal Funding Helps Give a Facelift to Riverfront

OTTAWA – Today's sod turning marked the official start of construction for the River Landing Phase II project.  The Honourable Carol Skelton, Member of Parliament for Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar, joined other dignitaries from the provincial and civic governments to mark the beginning of this exciting new project.

“Developing and providing new opportunities for our communities is important for our government.  I am proud to be able to participate in this exciting project that means so much to Saskatoon.   The new riverfront will become the centre of activity for years to come for the people of Saskatoon.  It's really going to revitalize this formal industrial area and make it a destination for our community,” Minister Skelton said.

The Phase II project complements the Phase I project to create a scenic destination for Saskatoon with the restoration of the former A.L. Cole pumphouse, new activity and boating areas as well as new pedestrian pathways.

The Government of Canada is providing up to $13.7 million towards the Phase II project through the Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund (CSIF).  In addition to these projects, the Riverfront will also include the new Isinger Pocket Park, the future home of the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market and Market Square, as well as new residential and commercial developments.

“Our government is committed to working in partnership with other orders of government to get things done for the people of Saskatoon,” said Minister Skelton.  “Our investment will help create an excellent people-oriented space near the river that will also promote tourism and economic development to help sustain the neighbourhood and surrounding areas.”
