Conservative Government Provides Support for Young Single Mothers

SASKATOON – Carol Skelton, Member of Parliament for Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar, today announced $70,000 in funding to the Central Urban Métis Federation Inc. of Saskatoon.  The funding will help approximately 30 young single mothers receive life skills training Infinity through the Infinity House Life Skills Project.

“Our Government is committed to assisting Aboriginal young people who face obstacles,” said Minister Skelton. “I am proud that we are supporting an organization that helps young Métis women gain their independence and succeed.”

Young Aboriginal mothers between the ages of 15 and 24 who face multiple barriers to self-sufficiency will go through a program to help them learn essential life skills to promote a healthy, self-sufficient lifestyle.  Funding is being made available through the Urban Multipurpose Aboriginal Youth Centres (UMAYC) programming element of the Aboriginal Peoples` Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage.  In total, the government of Canada spends $2 billion for Métis, Inuit and First Nations people living off reserve.

“Sending people down the path of independence requires learning important life skills.  I am pleased to see our government funding programs that helps young single mothers down this path,” Minister Skelton said.
